Under the auspices of the Ministry of the Environment, the Environmental Award was jointly established in 1974 by Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun, Ltd. and the Hitachi Environment Foundation to honor individuals/groups/organizations for their outstanding achievements in research, development, and other activities, which contributed to promoting sustainable development and preservation of the environment.
Since then, the Environmental Award has been recognized as a highly prestigious award in Japan that covers the full breadth of environmental issues.

The Environmental Research Quarterly has been published since 1972 and features the latest trends in environmental issues such as "environmental policies", "global warming", "new technologies", "biodiversity", and "education" as well as topics on foreign environmental laws. (only in Japanese)
The funding program was designed to support the activities of environmental NPOs. Several NPOs are selected annually from the areas of 1) coordination with the environment and the economy or 2) coordination with the environment and technology.
We have provided opportunities for people to learn the latest accurate information on environmental issues through the "Science Cafe" and symposia.
Surveys of various laws have been administered to better understand the environmental policies of foreign countries. These laws have been translated into Japanese and introduced in our "Environmental Research Quarterly".
